Additional information: In use: 30.09.1901. In practice, the stamps were exhausted by mid-1882, for the 5 stotinki stamp - by 12.1883, the 50 stotinki - by 06.1879, and for the 1 franc - by 1887.

BK 1 was printed three times - orders from 3.XII.1878 (50,000), 13.VIII.1879 (100,000) and 21.V.1880 (100,000), while 2-5 were printed only with the first order. The stated print runs of the individual denominations are disputed, as they do not correspond to documents indicating that the first order on 3.XII.1878 requested and delivered to Bulgaria a total of 1,000,000 stamps.

All denominations occur in darker or lighter shades, as well as printed on thin paper.

There exist imperforate versions of 3.

The watermark appears reversed by 180°, mirrored, mirrored and reversed 180°. Stamps with a larger part of the watermark letter visible are rarer.

Immediately after Liberation, Bulgaria had no national currency. In accordance with the requirements of the Universal Postal Union, the denominations of the first Bulgarian stamps are in the monetary unit of the Latin Monetary Union - gold franc, with 1 franc = 100 centimes. By law on June 4, 1880, the Bulgarian monetary unit gold lev was introduced, where 1 lev = 100 stotinki. Until the introduction of stamps denominated in stotinki and lev, the postal service used the rate 1 franc = 1 lev.

The order to print the first Bulgarian stamps was made by the Office of the Russian Imperial Commissioner in Bulgaria, Prince Alexander Dondukov-Korsakov, in the Russian Postal Department with letters No. 2757 of 21.IX.1878 (Plovdiv) and No. 4475 of 8.XI. same year (Sofia). The printed stamps were received in Bulgaria on 29.XI.1879. Two days after the conclusion of the Constituent National Assembly on 18.IV.1879, certain quantities of all stamps of all denominations were distributed to all existing post offices in Bulgaria with instructions to put them into use from 1.V.1879 together with the new postal regulations and to announce this to the public. The two largest post offices (cantories) in Sofia and Varna received 2,000 each, the stations in Tarnovo, Ruse, and Lom - 1,000 each, and the others - 500 each of all denominations of the series.

It is assumed that the artist of 1-5 was then the senior engraver (Z.Z.G.B.) Franz Kepler.
