| 01.05.1879 - " Centimes " Artist: Franz Kepler, Short description: The order for printing the first Bulgarian postage stamps was placed by the Office of the Russian Imperial Commissioner in Bulgaria, Prince Alexander Dondukov-Korsakov, at the Post Department of Russia with letters No. 2757 of 21.IX.1878 (Plovdiv) and No. 4475 of the Post Office of the Russian Imperial Commissar in Bulgaria (Sofia). The printed stamps were received in Bulgaria on 29.11.1879, two days after the completion of the work of the Constituent National Assembly, on 18.IV. In 1879, certain quantities of the Stamps of all values were sent to all existing post offices in Bulgaria with instructions to put them into use from 1.V.1879 together with the new postal rules, announcing this to the population. XII. 1878, a total of 1,000,000 stamps were requested for printing and arrived in Bulgaria.Of all values, they are found in darker or lighter shades, as well as printed on thin paper.Out of 3 they exist without serration.The watermark also occurs 180° inverted, mirrored, mirrored and 180° reversed. Brands with a larger part of a letter on the watermark are rarer.Immediately after the Liberation, Bulgaria did not have its own currency. In accordance with the requirements of the Universal Postal Union, the nominal values of the first Bulgarian postage stamps are in the currency of the Latin Monetary Union - gold franc, as 1 franc = 100 centimes. By a law of June 4, 1880, the Bulgarian currency of the golden lev was introduced, as 1 lev = 100 stotinki.
