In accordance with the requirements of the Universal Postal Union, the nominal values of the first Bulgarian postage stamps were in the currency of the Latin Monetary Union - the gold franc, with 1 franc = 100 stotinkaimes. By law of June 4, 1880, the Bulgarian currency, the gold lev, was introduced, with 1 lev = 100 stotinki. Until the introduction of postage stamps with values in stotinki and lev, post offices used the calculation 1 franc = 1 lev.
