The commemorative stamp issue “The Lord of the Rings – 25 Years” was officially released by the Portuguese Postal Service (CTT) on 1 July 2026, marking the 25th anniversary of the cinematic saga inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Developed in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the series celebrates the premiere of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the film that introduced Middle-earth to a new generation of viewers under the direction of Peter Jackson. Based on the revered books The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, the six-film adaptation achieved worldwide acclaim, earning around six billion dollars at the global box office and winning 17 Academy Awards. CTT presents the saga as the most awarded film series in the history of cinema. The narrative, set in Middle-earth, follows Frodo Baggins on his perilous quest to destroy the legendary One Ring-a symbol that also appears prominently in the visual composition of the issue.
The series is issued as a booklet containing six self-adhesive stamps, each with a face value of A20g, corresponding to national priority mail up to 20 grams. Every stamp measures 30.6 x 40 mm, according to the official release specifications, and the print run for the booklet is 40,000 copies. The graphic design was created by Carla Caraça Ramos, while printing was carried out by bpost Philately & Stamps Printing, the philatelic printing division of the Belgian postal service. The technical production relies on offset printing, ensuring high-quality color reproduction and fine detail.
Visually, the booklet adopts a composition strongly aligned with the graphic identity of Tolkien’s cinematic universe. The cover and inner sheet feature dominant green, gold, and ochre tones, enriched with ornamental frames and motifs inspired by the inscriptions on the One Ring. The six stamps depict scenes and landscapes from Middle-earth, including wide pastoral views, elven strongholds, luminous passages, shadowy environments, and elements of conflict or looming threat. Each stamp is accompanied by the commemorative “25 Years” emblem and the inscription “A20g Portugal.” The One Ring appears as a recurring motif, functioning as a visual link between the individual pieces and reinforcing the thematic unity of the issue.
The thematic scope of the release aligns with “Geek Culture” and “Anniversaries,” positioning the series both as a philatelic collectible and as a cultural tribute. The accompanying text highlights the enduring significance of the film trilogy, including the selection of The Fellowship of the Ring for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2021. It also notes the continuation of the franchise, with the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum planned for theatrical release following the 25th anniversary milestone.
With its combination of high-quality printing, carefully curated design, and strong thematic concept, the 2026 issue “The Lord of the Rings – 25 Years” stands out as one of the most notable philatelic releases of the year. For philatelists and Tolkien enthusiasts alike, it represents a valuable and evocative addition to any thematic collection.
