ПревюOn 15 July 2026, Romfilatelia and the Romanian Postal Service introduced into circulation the philatelic issue dedicated to Romanian Postage Stamp Day, honoring one of the most influential families in the country’s modern history – the Brătianu family. The date carries symbolic significance: on 15 July 1858, in Iași, the first Romanian postage stamp, the “Capul de bour” (Bull’s Head), was issued, marking the beginning of Romania’s national philatelic tradition. According to Law No. 62/2024, this day is officially celebrated as a tribute to the postage stamp as a cultural and historical emblem that has, over time, promoted Romanian personalities, events, and achievements both nationally and internationally.

The issue “Romanian Postage Stamp Day – Historical Families: The Brătianu Family” pays homage to what academician Ioan‑Aurel Pop called “Romania’s Uncrowned Dynasty.” Members of the Brătianu family played decisive roles in the three major stages of building the modern Romanian state: the Revolution of 1848, the Union of the Principalities in 1859, the proclamation of independence in 1877, and the formation of Greater Romania in 1918. Their contributions span politics, diplomacy, statecraft, culture, and historical scholarship, establishing the family as one of the pillars of Romanian national identity.

The philatelic series consists of three postage stamps, a block‑sheet, a First Day Cover, and a philatelic folder containing special limited‑edition products. The stamps are printed in offset, in four colors, on gummed stamp paper produced by Tullis Russel (UK origin), with a weight of 112 ± 4% g/m². Each stamp measures 36 × 72 mm, while the minisheet measures 165 × 126 mm. The graphic design is created by George Ursachi, who combines historical accuracy with refined visual composition. The face values are 5.50 Lei, 6.00 Lei, 6.50 Lei, 16.00 Lei, and 32.00 Lei, distributed across the stamps and the block‑sheet.

The stamp with the face value of 6 Lei features Ion C. Brătianu (1821–1891), one of the architects of the modern Romanian state. The background depicts his monument in Bucharest, designed by architect Petre Antonescu and sculpted by Ernest Henri Dubois. The 5.50 Lei stamp is dedicated to Ion I. C. Brătianu (1864–1927), a diplomat, engineer, and political leader who played a decisive role in the Great Union of 1918 and left a profound mark on Romania’s political development. The 16 Lei stamp presents a historical photograph of the Brătianu family, including the patriarch Ion C. Brătianu, his wife Pia, and their children.

The block‑sheet, with a face value of 32 Lei, depicts Ionel Brătianu against the backdrop of the Coronation Ceremony held in Alba Iulia on 15 October 1922, when King Ferdinand and Queen Marie were crowned as sovereigns of Greater Romania. This composition highlights the family’s essential role in shaping the Romanian state and strengthening its identity on the international stage.

The issue is part of the thematic categories History, Culture / Tradition, and Post, positioning it as a significant cultural product that blends philately with national heritage. With its high‑quality printing, historical depth, and rich symbolism, the 2026 series “Romanian Postage Stamp Day – Historical Families: The Brătianu Family” stands as a valuable philatelic document, paying well‑deserved tribute to a family that profoundly shaped Romania’s destiny.
