Additional information:For 112 stamps from the "Sofia" edition "Little Lion", printed in 1901 on cellulose paper, were used. 112 was made for charitable purposes and was practically not put into wide postal use. The small-circulation overprint was relied on to attract the attention of collectors of traveling illustrated postcards. 100 000 pcs. of the stamps were handed over on 9.III.1916 against payment at their nominal value to the representative of the German sanitary mission in Sofia. Some of these stamps were pasted over a certain amount of illustrated postcards with different plots (views and portraits). Shaped as printed works, they were stamped in various post offices in Bulgaria and the lands annexed during the war. Most of these postcards were stamped with the stamp of Skopje, where the headquarters of the German troops was located, hence the name of the overprint. The remainder of the stamps handed over to the German mission were sold to a large German philatelic trading firm. 10,000 stamps were stored in the State Securities Depository without being sent to the post offices and after 1931 were sold for collectors purposes through the post offices in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and Ruse. |
