Philately Bulgaria - New Generation

At Vrana Palace, a ceremonial validation of the new postal issue “Bulgarian Queens” took place — a project that unites different eras of Bulgarian statehood and pays well‑deserved tribute to the women who left a lasting mark on our history. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev, the Honorary Chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Philatelists H.M. Simeon Saxe‑Coburg‑Gotha, the Chairman of the UBF Spas Panchev, the CEO of Bulgarian Posts Zdravko Anakiev, and the artist behind the issue, Todor Angeliev. They performed the official act of validation, thus inscribing the series into the national philatelic heritage.

A particularly notable moment came when H.M. Simeon Saxe‑Coburg‑Gotha presented the “For Merit to the UBF” medal to Tatyana Popova — owner of “Avanti 777” and one of the most significant sponsors of the international philatelic exhibition Balkanphila 2026. The distinction acknowledges her exceptional contribution to Bulgarian philately and her key role in preparing the event. Without her support, the realization of Balkanphila 2026 would have been unthinkable. Her presence at the ceremony and the gesture of gratitude from the UBF highlighted the importance of cooperation between cultural institutions and responsible business.

Minister Georgi Peev described the new issue as a bridge between historical periods, recalling personalities who left a lasting imprint on Bulgarian culture and statehood. The stamps dedicated to Princess Maria, Giovanna of Savoy, Irene Lekapene, and Margarita Saxe‑Coburg‑Gotha impressed attendees with their artistic strength and historical precision. Minister Peev congratulated artist Todor Angeliev for his powerful project dedicated to “the strong women beside the Bulgarian rulers.”

The ceremony at Vrana became not only a presentation of a new philatelic issue but also a celebration of gratitude, continuity, and the collective efforts invested in the development of Bulgarian philately. “Bulgarian Queens” is more than a series of stamps — it is a symbol of respect for the women who stood beside the rulers, and for the people who today work to preserve our historical memory. The distinction awarded to Tatyana Popova clearly shows that the future of philately is built on cooperation, dedication, and a genuine love for cultural heritage.

Bulgarian Posts mark the 70th anniversary of the emblematic EUROPA philatelic series with an issue that impresses with its modern vision, conceptual depth and respect for European cultural tradition. The 2026 theme – “United in…” – is interpreted through a vivid visual language that highlights the ideas of community, continuity and cultural unity among the European nations. Artist Damyan Damyanov creates a composition in which tradition and modernity intertwine to tell the story of European philately through the prism of time.

The central motif is a series of clock towers – symbols of European urban culture, of the shared historical rhythm and of the time lived by all nations together. From left to right, the silhouettes represent the towers of Tallinn, Bern, Bansko, Prague, Stockholm, Brussels and Luxembourg – cities with strong architectural and cultural identities. In the composition they become part of a unified visual narrative, emphasizing the idea of European unity. The illustrated envelope accompanying the issue expands the theme by depicting a detail of a clock mechanism – a metaphor for precision, synchrony and the interdependence of all elements within the European community.

The anniversary issue was validated on 30 April 2026 at the Palace of Culture in Pernik. It includes several types of philatelic products, among them a miniature sheet containing three stamps of each denomination and two decorative tabs, printed digitally in a run of 4,700 copies. The stamps have denominations of €0.80 and €1.65, size 50×25 mm, and comb perforation, with a print run of 14,100 copies for each denomination. The second type is a souvenir sheet with two stamps, also with denominations of €0.80 and €1.65, frame perforation and a print run of 4,700 copies. The third product is a booklet containing two miniature sheets, each with four stamps of both denominations, size 44×20 mm, vertical line perforation and a total print run of 2,250 booklets (9,000 stamps of each denomination). The issue also includes an illustrated postal envelope with an original postal service value sign (€0.50) and a limited print run of 476 copies, as well as a special postmark used during the “Balkanphila 2026” exhibition in Pernik.

With its vibrant colours, modern graphic style and strong symbolism, EUROPA 2026 is an issue that not only commemorates a significant anniversary but also tells a story – about time, community and European identity. It is a stamp that will take a worthy place in philatelic collections and will remain one of the most distinguished Bulgarian contributions to the EUROPA series in recent decades.

NORDIA 2026 – one of the most significant philatelic events in Northern Europe – took place in Espoo, Finland, bringing together collectors, researchers, and experts from dozens of countries. The exhibition offered a rich program, high‑level exhibits, and impressive organization, reaffirming NORDIA’s position as a leading philatelic forum in the region.

The event began on 7 May with the mounting of exhibits and the start of jury work, while the official opening ceremony was held on 8 May in the Kaleva Hall. From the very first day, visitors were able to join guided tours, lectures, presentations, and expert meetings. The program included thematic tours, sessions of philatelic organizations, specialized lectures in traditional philately, postal history, aerophilately, and postal stationery, as well as numerous opportunities for collectors from different countries to connect.

The exhibition showcased dozens of high‑quality exhibits, covering a wide range of topics—from classic Finnish and Scandinavian philately to European and global postal history, as well as rare international collections, including the Danish West Indies, Estonia, Madagascar, Iceland, Bulgaria, Russia, Tuva, the Arabian Peninsula, and many others. Special invited exhibits and collections from the Finnish Postal Museum were also on display.

Saturday evening was dedicated to the traditional Palmarès ceremony—the official gala dinner and awards presentation. This is where the major winners of NORDIA 2026 were announced.

Grand Prix Nordia Erik Benny Winther, Denmark – “Danish West Indies 1856–1917 Stamps and Postage Due” An exceptionally thorough study of the postal history and issues of the Danish West Indies.

International Grand Prix Jaan Roots, Norway – “Estonia, The First Ten Years 1918–1928” An impressive collection presenting the first decade of independent Estonian philately.

Nordic Grand Prix Are Døvle, Norway – “The postal history of Finmark up to 1896” A deep exploration of the postal history of Finmark—one of the northernmost and most remote regions of Scandinavia.

National Grand Prix Atte Moilanen, Finland – “The Earliest Forms of Postal Delivery in Finland – with focus on manuscript markings” An outstanding contribution to the early postal history of Finland, with a strong emphasis on manuscript postal markings.

NORDIA 2026 left a lasting impression with its excellent organization, rich program, and the exceptional quality of the exhibits. The event served as a platform for knowledge exchange, new connections, and inspiration for everyone who values philately as science, history, and culture.

The Specialized World Stamp Exhibition Macao 2026, also known as MACAO 2026, will take place from 26 June to 1 July 2026 and represents the first philatelic event of such scale ever organized in Macao. The exhibition is a joint initiative of the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau and the Macau Philatelic Association, held under the patronage of the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) and the auspices of the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP). The event will feature approximately 1,500 exhibition frames and around 50 commercial booths, bringing together collectors, institutions, postal administrations, and philatelic dealers from around the world.

The main goal of the exhibition is to promote international exchange and cooperation in philately, to encourage a wide range of philatelic activities, and to foster new friendships among participants. Visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate the refined art of postage stamps and experience the unique atmosphere of Macao — a place where Chinese culture is predominant yet coexists harmoniously with other cultural influences.

The exhibition will present collections in various competitive classes recognized by FIP, including traditional philately, postal history, thematic exhibits, and philatelic literature. A program of lectures, demonstrations, workshops, and youth activities is planned to support learning and inspire interest in philately among new generations. Special stamp issues and commemorative cancellations prepared by different postal administrations are also expected to mark the occasion.

With its rich history and cultural diversity, Macao is an ideal host for such an international event. Guests will not only enjoy philatelic masterpieces but also discover the city’s architecture, museums, traditions, and culinary heritage, shaped over centuries at the crossroads of civilizations.

The World Philatelic Exhibition BOSTON 2026 will take place from 23 to 30 May 2026 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, one of the largest and most modern congress facilities in the United States. The event is held under the patronage of the FIP and represents the most significant international philatelic forum of the decade, bringing together collectors, researchers, institutions and dealers from around the world.

Boston is a city with deep historical roots in the development of the American postal system. It was here, in the eighteenth century, that the first organized postal routes in North America were established, and the postal services played an important role in communications during the American Revolution. Today the city is known for its universities, museums and cultural institutions, which makes it a natural host for a world philatelic exhibition with a scientific and historical character.

More than 80 countries are expected to participate, represented by their national philatelic federations, museums, archives and private collectors. The exhibition will include classical philatelic rarities from the nineteenth century, unique postal documents, thematic exhibits, rare archival materials and modern multimedia presentations. Many of the items will be shown only on this occasion and represent an important part of the world’s postal heritage.

The competitive section of the exhibition will cover all international philatelic classes recognized by the FIP. An international jury of established experts will evaluate the exhibits according to the federation’s strict criteria, and the awards will include medals from bronze to large gold, as well as special prizes for outstanding achievements. Strong participation is expected in traditional philately, postal history, thematic exhibits and philatelic literature.

Throughout the eight days of the exhibition, numerous lectures, seminars and discussions will be held, dedicated to new research, expertizing of forgeries, digitization of archives and contemporary approaches to philatelic exhibiting. This makes BOSTON 2026 not only an exhibition, but also an international scientific forum that brings together specialists from different fields.

The commercial area of the exhibition will be one of the largest ever organized at a world philatelic event. It will feature leading dealers, auction houses, publishers and postal administrations. Many countries will present new stamp issues, first day covers and special cancellations created specifically for BOSTON 2026. This will give collectors the opportunity to acquire rare and limited materials.

The organizers are preparing an extensive program for children and young people, including workshops, educational tours and interactive activities. The aim is to attract new generations to philately and to show that stamps are not only collectible items, but also a way to explore history, geography, art and culture.
